11/9 – Marmorato (R) unseats Velázquez (D)
in Bronx City Council race

Republican Kristy Marmorato defeated Democratic incumbent Marjorie Velázquez in the Bronx's City Council race, marking a significant shift in an area dominated by Democrats for four decades. This victory, achieved by a narrow margin, reflects changing political dynamics in the Bronx, where the Republican Party aggressively campaigned on crime and housing issues. While Republicans also saw significant gains on Long Island, Democrats performed well in other parts of New York City and beyond, indicating a complex and varied political landscape to contend with in 2024.

11/10 – Campaign Investigation Intensifies as FBI Seizes NYC Mayor Eric Adams' Devices

Following a raid on the home of his chief fundraiser, the FBI seized New York City Mayor Eric Adams' electronic devices. The FBI is investigating whether the campaign violated campaign finance law by accepting money from the Turkish government and other entities, possibly in exchange for political favors. In statements and press appearances, Adams has assured New Yorkers that he has nothing to hide. It is reported that he is fully cooperating with federal authorities.

11/16 – Congress Passes Stopgap Funding to Prevent Shutdown

Congress averted a government shutdown with a temporary funding bill, but a long-term budget deal remains out of reach. The bill, known as a continuing resolution, maintains current funding levels but excludes policy conditions, angering far-right Republicans seeking cuts and conservative policy stipulations. Facing deadlines for appropriating funds for various agencies, the measure presents significant hurdles for GOP leaders in the upcoming year. They are tasked with unifying a fragmented party to reach a consensus on a sustainable budget agreement.

11/20 – Rosalynn Carter Dies at 96

Rosalynn Carter, the first lady who played a pivotal role in Jimmy Carter's ascent from rural Georgia to the presidency, passed away at 96. Her tenure as First Lady included attending cabinet meetings, advocating for mental health care, and actively participating in policy and politics. The Carters' marriage spanned nearly eight decades, a partnership marked by dedication to public service, emphasizing contributions to human rights, health, and Habitat for Humanity.

11/9 – NJ Dems Retain
Legislative Majority

In New Jersey's legislative races, Democrats overcame a challenging political environment and successfully retained their majority in the General Assembly and the State Senate. In the previous election cycle, Republicans added seven seats. Despite these gains, Democrats held their ground in southern, central, and northern New Jersey. They expanded their presence in the Assembly, maintaining a legislative dominance they've enjoyed for two decades.

11/14 – Supreme Court Adopts New Ethics Code

After recent revelations of undisclosed gifts and travel triggered public outrage, the US Supreme Court adopted an ethics code. The nine-page document aims to clarify ethical guidelines that justices should adhere to, emphasizing the importance of avoiding activities that could undermine the dignity of their office or influence official conduct. Legal experts criticized the code for its lack of enforcement mechanisms and reliance on self-regulation. Notably, the code does not include procedures for addressing violations or recusal requirements in cases of conflicts of interest.

11/19 – Advertisers Halt Ad Spend on X Amid Musk Controversy

Several major companies, including Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony, IBM, Apple, Lionsgate, and Paramount Global, suspended their advertising on X following backlash against an antisemitic post from Elon Musk, the company's owner. The White House condemned Musk's actions, emphasizing how severely harmful his endorsement of the rhetoric is. Musk threatened legal actions against Media Matters, an organization that pointed out ads for Apple, IBM, and other brands have been appearing alongside pro-Nazi content. The incident sparked concern among advertisers and users regarding the platform's content moderation policies, an issue that has followed Musk since he acquired Twitter (now X) in 2022. According to internal documents, the social media company could lose as much as $75 million in advertising revenue by the end of the year.

11/24 – 11/30 – Israel-Hamas Temporary Ceasefire Sees Hostage and Prisoner Release, Aid Entrance Into Gaza

Following a temporary six-day ceasefire brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, Hamas released a total of 100 hostages, and Israel freed 240 Palestinian prisoners after seven weeks of war. While the pause allowed desperately needed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, the truce ended on November 30 after peace talks between Israel and Hamas collapsed.
